As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions. It is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:1-6 NIV).
The state of anyone who has not been convicted of his/her sins, repented of them and totally surrender to Jesus as his/her Lord and Saviour according to the text passage, is graphically painted as being spiritually dead (that is, being without the life and nature of God); a hopeless follower of the evil ways of the world and a helpless subject to the whims and caprices of satanic rulers and powers.
Those of us, who are not believers in Christ were once as described above, living according to our natural desires, doing what suited the wishes of our bodies and minds under the influence of Satan and we like everyone else, according to the word of God were destined to suffer God’s wrath.
The text passage of this meditation also goes further to unequivocally state that what happens to a true Christian at conversion is actually a spiritual miracle, made possible by the wonderful grace and love of God. At salvation, a Christian is made to understand and acknowledge that he/she is a sinner, he is brought to genuine repentance, and faith in Christ, he/she is forgiven and receives an impartation of God’s life or nature; he/she is made to renounce and separate from the way of the world and he/she is delivered from the influence and dominion of Satan and finally, in union with Christ he/she is raised to rule with Him in the heavenly realms.
So, every true Christian whose absolute trust is in Christ has gone through the experience of resurrection from a dead state to become alive in Christ; he/she is not supposed to live careless and ungodly life as the non-Christians do again; and he/she should no longer allow himself/herself to be controlled or manipulated again by the prince of the powers of the air, but by the Holy Spirit of God.
