Text: Philippians 2:1-5

Mind is defined as the part or faculty of a person by which he perceives, feels, thinks, remembers, desires and imagines. The best thing we can possess in life to live well and to live up to what the Lord expects of us is that we must have the mind of Christ. Everything we do must be in line with the will of God. The mind of Christ is the attitude of total submission to the will of God and abiding in His law.

Having the mind of Christ means we should understand the purpose of God for creating us in His own image and the reason why the Lord want us back into His kingdom and His love towards our lives. Philippians 2:1-5 emphasises on what is expected of a genuine child of God. We are to be of the same mind with Christ, having the same love and being in full accord of one mind with one another. When we have the mind of Christ, we will keep all the status that the Lord has laid down for us and we will do nothing without consulting the Lord. Jesus says in Matthew 18:1-3 that only those that humble themselves as little children can enter the kingdom of heaven. How many of us are ready to humble ourselves as little children to allow God to control our lives?

In Philippians 2: 1-11, Paul the apostle stressed thrice that the followers of Christ should be of the same mind. This means we should have the same mindset, attitude and approach to life like Jesus. To attain the higher ground that God has given to us this year, we need to be in one accord. The devil cannot have his way in our lives when we are in one accord.

The bible mentioned three things we must do for our lives to have a mindset that agrees with God:

  1. Set your affection on things above (Colossians 3:2). We are to take our minds far away from the things of this world that perish. We are to work towards the glorious hope, praising God for eternity. Setting our affection on things above is the key to resisting the devil and temptations. It is a blueprint for overcoming every form of unpalatable situation that may come our way.
  2. Be not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2). This poses a question to us. Is our mind renewed? The passage is an appeal to all believers to do away with every worldly practices and ensure our live style is in line with the purpose of God for our lives.
  3. Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober and hope to the end (1 Peter 1:13a). We should be prepared. We should not allow anything to catch us unaware. We should hold on to the end so we will not be disappointed at the second coming of Jesus Christ. The passage is also a call to put a check and have control over what we do and how we live our lives. Having the mind of Christ will cause great transformation in our lives.

If you allow God to reign in your life and take charge of your mind, your life will not remain the same. When we have the mind of Christ our lives will be renewed. We therefore need to allow our mind to always thirst after God’s word. Let the word of God be the compass that will guide your life.
